Neurodiversity Affirming Therapy
Greenlake Psychology is a neurodiversity-affirming practice, which means we see neurodivergence as an identity rather than a disorder.
The umbrella of neurodivergence includes autism, ADHD, learning disorders, intellectual disabilities, and other brain differences. We do not endorse ABA or other behavioral therapies that aim to control behavior, mask neurodivergence, or encourage conformity. Instead, we will work to help you or your child understand themselves and what they need, taking into account sensory needs, their unique cognitive profile, their stage of development, and your parenting style.
While we do not see neurodivergence as something that needs to be “treated,” we do understand that neurodivergent individuals often need support and accommodation due to living in a world designed for neurotypical individuals. Neurodivergent people may experience marginalization or bullying, develop maladaptive beliefs about the self, and experience emotional distress in response to these social experiences.
We work frequently with children and adults who fit a Pathological Demand Avoidance/Pervasive Drive for Autonomy (PDA) profile.
